When I first came to the US, the common health practice that shock me the most was giving cold water to patients with fever. In Chinese culture, it is understood, goes without saying, that cold drink is NOT good for patients.
When I was a kid, when I got a fever, my mother would just give me some HOT herbal tea, then take a HOT bath, and go straight to bed under the covers to sweat it out. Works every time!
Then I came to the US and got married. My toddler daughter got a fever, my mother-in-law told me to give my duaghter ice cream!! I was so shock, and I am still not over that shock yet!
