Half your argument is crap. In the UK, it is against the law for an 'expert' to come out on telly and give their support to product X, Y or Z. Adverts for drugs are also banned. I cannot speak for the culture over in the US, but over this side of the pond we have a much tighter control over the pharmaceutical companies - even though they are more important for our economy. It is also frowned upon for a researcher to be funded by a drug company, as it will bias their results.
Do not apply U.S. standards to the U.K. There is much tighter regulation here. Funding at Uni's is also funded by the government - not by the drug companies. Again - do not apply your money-grabbing culture to us. Bloody Americans, always money, money, money.
