Vekky: "We'll never have assurance of salvation, or we shouldn't at least, if we are looking to our own works for that assurance. Our works will always fall short of the righteousness that God requires for salvation. Trusting in the righteousness of Christ alone and believing that righteousness is imputed to us if we have faith in Him, is what will give us the assurance of salvation and being secure in our salvation is actually what brings about good works. Trying to prove to God and ourselves that we are saved by the evidence of our works will only bring despair or pride, both which are very harmful and not based on faith in Christ alone."
Me: What you said here is very true, but there are other verses that we need to include in the whole picture. The Bible tells us to examine ourselves. The Bible tells us that many who thought they were saved will be turned away on that day. Those who were turned away by Christ are called workers of iniquity. In other words, those who were practicing sin, those who did not hate their sin, those who did not seek to overcome their sin. I doubt very many of us, if any of us, can be perfect, but if we are truly a Christian we will fight our sin.
Those who fight sin to prove to God and themselves that they are saved are doing it for the wrong motives. If they are trying to earn their salvation by the Lordship salvation doctrine we know that cannot be done as you mentioned. The problem is that many do not want to hear about other verses in the Bible that can show us if we are saved. If we are not saved we should doubt our salvation. Salvation is something we need to be sure of. Those who are not sure should do exactly as you said which is "Trusting in the righteousness of Christ alone and believing that righteousness is imputed to us if we have faith in Him, is what will give us the assurance of salvation and being secure in our salvation is actually what brings about good works."
Some people like to stay asleep listening to the greasy grace lullabies. They love their license to sin. We need to hear all of God's word. Paul Washer is a Calvinist who seems to be hated by many. He is accused of preaching Lordship salvation, but is that really what he is doing? Or, is he preaching the hard verses? The verses people don't want to hear? This is a great message by this Calvinist preacher. I will say that he sure isn't preaching Calvinism in this one.
