Re: moving adonai to here
lets talk about job for a minute.
the reason job is so important is because it ties a lot of things together. it is also the oldest book in the bible. certainly this story came to us through the flood.
the reason we know this is because of two things.
one, the sons of god were meeting regularly with god. this did not happen after the flood. the problem was lifespans were more limited and there werent that many people at first.
pre-flood you had people living a long long time and there was certainly things to talk about.
why job? who was job? why was he so special when god was already meeting with his sons? surely they had their own business, didnt they? job is not in any genealogy.
well, the meeting takes place and satan shows up. satan, a neandertal, a serpent seed. god asks him what hes been doing. lo and behold, exactly what the lord had told him.
Genesis 1:28
And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
Job 1
6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them. 7 And the Lord said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
i already talked about the command to be fruitful and multiply. but you can see that the first creation was also to subdue the earth. you can do your own word study if you like but basically this is a notion of going back and forth on the earth in order to learn it.
all you city slickers and country bumpkins have no idea what the real world is like. well, you’re in luck. i do. when you tread down the earth, as it says here, you walk the same route back and forth and back and forth. you establish a route, a trail that is easier to travel than raw country. you also have time along the to learn what it along the trail, both flora and fauna. knowledge is power and you learn to own the route you take. you learn the fruits and when they are in season, the animals and when they migrate, etc, etc.
well darn if satan isnt obeying god just like he was told, or, since he is a liar, it could have been a fib, but he makes sure to let god know that he has been doing what he is supposed to.
then god asks him to consider his servant job. why job? what is so special about job? i figure he is not a son of god so he is either in the line of cain or he is an outright neandertal.
but he has a relationship with the creator which the creator is proud of, for lack of a better word.
well, satan, being the one who opposes and all, tells god that hes playing favorites and that if he wasnt so cozy with the guy and protecting him (probably from satan or other neandertals, i.e. jealousy) he would turncoat in a heartbeat.
well, you know the story, or should anyway, and job gets afflicted several times but does not turn away from god for it. in fact they must have been talkin, him and god, because he says what is one of the most beautiful passages in scripture.
Job 19
21
Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends;
for the hand of God hath touched me.
22
Why do ye persecute me as God,
and are not satisfied with my flesh?
23
Oh that my words were now written!
oh that they were printed in a book!
24
That they were graven with an iron pen and lead
in the rock for ever!
25
For I know that my redeemer liveth,
and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:
26
and though after my skin worms destroy this body,
yet in my flesh shall I see God:
27
whom I shall see for myself,
and mine eyes shall behold, and not another;
though my reins be consumed within me.
god showed kindness and mercy to cain. but here we see our merciful god giving hope to a man who should have had none. quite compelling, this man job. and without his story we would not have nearly the confirmation of understanding the garden and the goins on before the flood.
