Once or twice a week I eat fish, usually sardines or wild salmon. According to the book "The Perfect Health Diet" we should not take fish oil in pills or bottles because it goes rancid fast, so the best way is to just get your Omega 3 from fish.

Omega-3 Toxicity
The peroxidative index of omega-3 fats is even higher than that of omega-6, so they can certainly cause
mitochondrial damage, DNA mutations, shortened life span, and the other negative effects of lipid
peroxidation.
Known toxicity effects of high omega-3 intake include:
• Liver damage. When omega-3 fats are eaten in conjunction with alcohol or fructose, they are just as
effective as omega-6 fats at causing liver disease.50
• Bleeding and stroke. High omega-3 intake, especially of EPA and DHA, prolongs bleeding times
and may increase the risk of stroke. In Greenland Eskimos with very high intakes of EPA+DHA (6.5
grams per day, equivalent to about 5 pounds of salmon per week), an increased incidence of
hemorrhagic stroke has been observed.51
• Early aging and shortened life span. We saw that a higher peroxidation index was associated with
shortened life span in animals. Animal studies show that high omega-3 intake can shorten life span,
probably through increased peroxidation. One study showed that when pregnant rats are given
excessive doses of omega-3 fats, their offspring have shortened life span and greater neural
degeneration in old age. The authors concluded, “both over- and under-supplementation with
omega-3 FA can harm offspring development.”52 In another study, feeding mice a high-fish-oil diet
shortened their average life span because of peroxidative stress.53
Omega-3 toxicity is even greater if the omega-3 fats are allowed to become rancid. In general, fish are
refrigerated or frozen immediately after catch and their omega-3 oils remain fresh. However, fish oil
capsules are usually stored at room temperature for long periods of time. The fish oil in capsules must
therefore often become rancid, since omega-3 fats are so easily oxidized.
It is interesting that fish consumption has an excellent record in clinical trials, but fish oil capsule
supplements do not. In the Diet and Angina Randomized Trial (DART-2), 3,114 men with stable angina
were followed for three to nine years. There were a control group, a group advised to eat oily fish, and a
group taking three fish oil capsules daily. There was a significant increase in sudden cardiac death among the
subgroup taking fish oil capsules.

Do not take fish oil capsules. Get your omega-3 fats from fish.
