Heartworm are a form of filaria. People can get zoonotic filaria. I can't say that this is what you have, but you should research it. Filaria adults are called macrofilaria. Filaria babies are called either plain old filaria or microfilaria.
The adults can't really be killed. Only the babies can be killed. There are protocols out there with doxycycline and ivermectin. It is a lifelong disease, or if someone is diligent, they can kill the babies every day for 20 years until the adults finally die of old age.
Have no idea if this is what you have. But dog heartworm is definitely filaria.
