Re: Infections with mirena

I am glad to have found this forum. The more I read the more I feel that the infections I am experiencing are due to the IUD. I had Mirena put in last May. The insertion was horribly painful which my gyno did not prepare me for. But that's the least of my worries now.

For a month now, I've had a consistent yeast infection and also they said I had and IUD and BV! I do have a hot tub so they said it was probably due to it making the PH of my vagina off, but I don't know, I've had the hot tub for nearly 3 years and no issues.

I have not had a yeast infection in over 10 years (Im 38, been monogamous for all that time...wanted to put that in there because the doctors have tested me for every STD from A to Z and nothing has come up...I was starting to think I missed something!!) About 10 years ago, I had a bout of frequent UTI's but finally was diagnosed with pelvic floor issues and saw a PT and it was resolved. I've had one child who is now 7. No issues with my vaginal health since her birth.

I have had 20 days of diflucan, 7 of Flagyl, and an Antibiotic for the UTI. That was in the first week, I feel like the UTI is resolved. But I still have visible yeast, some itching and burning the vulva and vaginal skin, as well as some swelling inside (swelling inside was so bad that I had to go to the ED and they gave me more diflucan, high doses of ibuprofen and percocet for the pain---It was BAD. I've only ever gone to the ED with a broken foot...I don't go unless its really BAD.

My Gyno insists I have no bacteria showing up on my cultures, yet why is this still here? I mean what else could it be? ???

The symptoms have reduced---there were a few days of no itching and burning but always visible white yeast. Today there is more and I have more burning and discomfort. This is also the time that I would have normally had a period and I feel my ovaries are sore.

I don't bleed with the Mirena, but I have all the other side effects of PMS, breast soreness, bloating, I have gained about 10 lbs since last year, I only use free and clear detergents and only Dove sensitive soap in that area.

I am so at my wits end with this infection!!! Its painful and Ive had to be off work quite a bit. I ice it and that provides some relief but who has time to sit with an ice pack on their business all the time?

I have a NEW GYNO tues and I am glad to be changing, the one I have just isn't sympathetic or throughout enough to address all my issues/questions.

They haven't done an ultrasound to see if the mirena has shifted or such and from what I understand, I'd have different symptoms if that were the issue (pelvic pain, bleeding, etc.)

Anyone else have yeast and infections with the Mirena? from what I read, its more common than the doctors say. Something about the coils and the way it works. I have a friend who had a yeast infection every month on the pill---I wonder if the hormones in the IUD can also cause this?

I chose it because it sounded like great birth control protection and the added bonus of no periods. But now I feel like my body isn't "right" without having a period to cleanse and get rid of things each month. I have never been a fan of my period but given this current issues, I would welcome it back if I could feel no itching/burning and yeast again!
