Ive often wondered why serum potassium labs are so frequently done. We know that the body maintains serum potassium (and many other minerals like magnesium) within pretty tight tolerances, even when the body is largely in a deficient state.
The lab test really only highlites serious problems yet most people and even docs seem to think the serum levels are an indicator of proper systemic levels and they are not.
To highlight that prior to supplementing potassium I was averaging about 2000mg a day intake from food alone. FDA recommend 4700mg. My potassium labs were 4.2. Now over a year later of supplementing 2000-3000mg a day of potassium.......guess what? My serum potassium is still 4.2. However the positive effects of the supplementation are clearly evident.
