Re: What do you think of what this doctor doing nutrition work in integrative medicine is preaching. I really want opinions and is he full of it??
I had severe hypothyroidism for 7 years before seeing Dr. Aukerman (he was recommended by a friend who had Stage 4 cancer, but went into remission after following his protocol). As typical with hypo patients, I took synthetic hormone daily -- but I never felt 'right' and my levels always seemed to fluctuate. I was so sensitive that I remember shaving pills down with a knife based on how high or low I felt that morning.
I figured going to see Dr. Aukerman was worth a try, given that I had seen every other type of Dr. His plan seemed crazy and contrary to mainstream assumptions about medicine and nutrition, but I decided to follow it completely. I expected to lose some weight due to the cleaner diet, but not any real improvement in my core condition.
During my followup visit, he took the time to explain all the bloodwork results and how they related to his plan and my condition. He explained how I would progress on the plan, and what results I would see related to my hypothyroidism, and x, y, z conditions (that he diagnosed me with).
All I can say is that it worked exactly like he said it would. I gradually lowered my thyroid dose as the gluten buildup started to diminish in my body (amazingly, based on the information he had given me on gluten clearance rates, and my initial bloodwork results, the stepdowns in my thyroid dosage were predicted nearly down to the day). I have followed his plan for 1.5 years now and continue to be off my thryoid medication, my TSH levels are normal, and I feel consistently well.
All of his claims are tied to some research study or another, and there's no way he's got it all right.... but he's onto something that brings true healing for his patients. There are many, many other stories like mine of people having success with this plan (cancer patients, diabetics, mental disorders, etc.)
This is not a placebo effect as someone suggested previously -- I was a skeptic who expected only to lose weight on the plan (and joked about how this or that made no sense) but I saw an elimination of my condition (even though hashimotos thyroidism is considered a lifelong condition requiring ongoing treatment) that occured in a way and at a rate exactly as he said it would, and my bloodwork returned to normal ranges, even after discontinuing my supplemental thyroid hormone completely.
And it's a tough plan to follow -- so forget the 'power of positive thinking'. Most of the time I'm complaining about no pizza and beer.....but at least I'm well.
I would wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone with significant health concerns, especially those who have had little success with the mainstream health system.
