Re: PCUSA Rejected
In Christ, we can do whatever he gives us the power to do.
But those seeking to be saved by their own righteousness are not in Christ.
All the scriptures like the one about having the faith of a mustard seed and being able to move mountains are talking about those that are in Christ, that have ceased from trusting in their own works to be saved, and are trusting in Christ for their salvation.
So yes, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
Phil. 4:13
But that doesn't mean we can do all things according to our own desires and wills, but according the the will of God.
Ephesians 1:11
In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose OF HIM WHO WORKS ALL THINGS ACCORDING TO THE COUNSEL OF HIS WILL.
As for doing greater works than Jesus did, I believe that means this: Jesus made it clear that the church's main purpose was the great commision,
Matthew 28:
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[a] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
The church is to spread the gospel to the ends of the earth!
I believe that is what Jesus meant when he said you will do greater works than me, meaning, more will hear the gospel through the disciples and the church as a whole, than through his ministry while he was on earth.
