Re: PCUSA Rejected
Yes, that is basically the essence of Christianity that we are completely sinful and undeserving but through the grace of Christ, we can receive salvation through no effort and action of our own selves. It may sound unfair or incorrect, but that is the fundamental gospel of Christ as Vektek described. Personally, I think it is silly that they want to change the words to that song. I want to share my own thoughts on God's wrath and I don't claim this to be based on scripture, it is based on my experiences with my relationship with Christ.
I think God's wrath is a very real thing but I think sometimes our understanding of this concept is incorrect. When we think of wrath, we think of the human understanding that is tied to emotions of hate and anger. God is not a human and does not have our human emotions of hate and anger. My understanding of God's wrath is to leave us to our own state of sin and ego. It is the opposite of mercy that is granted by God to those who are his faithful servants. All of the hellish suffering that goes along with God's wrath is not a punishment created by God, it is a state of existence that goes hand and hand with the human state of existence and sin. Satan is the creator of the real suffering, misery and hell. God would never create this type of suffering or ever want any of His children to live in this state, it is only when we choose to live as we please and do not repent and come to Him to receive His mercy that we have to suffer the consequences of our sinful lives. So this is God's wrath, to not give us His grace because you didn't ask for it, you wanted to do everything on your own so He leaves you to your own devices of sin and hell. To me this is exactly what the lyrics to that song mean, something that is of absolute utmost importance in Christianity, sad that they want to get rid of this. Yes of course God loves all of us the sinners and all but that doesn't stop you from still being damned unless you repent and receive the grace of Christ into your life.
Chaz, it is not like welfare at all because to receive welfare you don't have to give up anything to receive it. To receive the grace of Christ you have to give up everything, all of your ego-attachments, everything you surrender to Him.
