Longterm, I'm with you on this. I think if the leave it alone method is going to be done it needs to be in conjunction with moisturizer. Especially if you conclude that it is a form of wound. I know people don't think it's a scab but maybe it could be a form of callous or something. In any case the ideal environment for a wound being healed is a moist one.
