What Are Sugar Snakes Anyway

This plug of black, white, clear, brown, and mottled color "sugar snakes" came from a spot at the nape of my neck that never seemed to go away... Previously I'd never seen them nested like this, but rather singly on my skin or stuck in parasite paste.

Look close and there's a clear paddle shaped thingy attached to a gelatinous cord...? I think these are light/energy harvesting because the way light travels through them and lights up at the end, like fiber-optics. They are also statically drawn to clear packing tape. When these were more numerous I was more statically charged, and zapped myself costantly on metal and other people, etc...

That still doesn't answer the question of what these motile hairs really are, what are they doing and where did they come from??

Here's another one and I've taken just a ridiculous amount of other similarly "lit up" pictures... So I figure it's not a couple of random tricks of light, but something they do.
