Does acidophilus cause dental plaque?

Hi,

I have a friend that says probiotics are bad for you. I completely disagree and will be telling him my opinion on that.

Then he sends me an email saying acidophilus lactobacillus causes dental caries.

I found this study:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21342140

Here is the expanded summary on this study in PDF format:(I've shorten the link as it was distorting the page. You can find it in Google by searching acidophilus dental plaque. The website is Researchgate.)

I don't understand some of the terminolgy such as mutans and non mutans etc. Could someone please summarize this for me? It seems they are saying acidophilus is good because it sticks onto Streptococci which helps to prevent plaque?

This book says it isn't true but of course you have to buy the book to find out why. :( http://www.curetoothdecay.com/Tooth_Decay/germs_cavities.htm

I found this http://www.curetoothdecay.com/Dentistry/dentist-charles-Bodecker-tooth-decay-...

This is the original link my friend gave me on probiotics not being needed. There's a lot I don't agree with.

(There's negative things written about this author on the internet). A 1/4 of the way down she writes about the research done by Dr. A. Weston on the effects of acidophilus on teeth. I thought Weston Price was was pretty reliable but I don't know now.

This is Dr. Jeff's opinion of that article:

So I have a good argument for why we need probiotics but I don't know about them causing plaque. Could someone enlighten me? I just have a hard time believing good bacteria (that we are born with/is natural to the body) could cause plaque which then causes dental caries.

Thanks,

Cheryl
