 Stress increases hyperventilation .... which will lead to shortness of breath.

 
Do you find yourself taking sudden gasps of air?   This is sort of like apnea while you are awake.
 
Check your Control Pause (CP) as per the link above.  If it is low, it means your cells are starving for oxygen.
 
It is not intuitive at all, but hyperventilation actually results in less oxygen being delivered to your cells.
 
One reason is that low CO2 results in constricted blood vessels ... hence the light headedness when hyperventilating.
 
The 2nd reason is due to the Bohr effect.
