Re: What are typical ketone levels during an extended fast?

An article from UC Denver http://bit.ly/14NeRgg
discusses urine versus blood ketone levels. No mention is made of a difference in measured value between blood versus urine; apparently they are equivalent. The blood tests measure beta-hydroxybutyric acid; the urine tests measure acetoacetic acid (the third kind of ketone being acetone which is exhaled in the breath). The main difference between the two kinds of test, besides cost, is the 2 hour time lag in the urine test which is important for urgent diabetic cases, not so much for fasting. The article agrees with other Internet sources in defining 40 mg/dL as "moderate". Greater than 3 mmol/L (54 mg/dL) is considered dangerous when accompanied by high blood glucose, indicating onset of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).
