Re: iodine in pregnancy

I don't know if it makes sense to include a reply to this thread that I started back when I first became pregnant, but I wanted to leave a record for anyone else who may be searching for answers to the questions I was asking.

I currently have a beautiful, happy, healthy 9-month old baby boy. I stayed on Iodine throughout pregnancy although I did drop my dose to 12.5 per day at around 8 weeks because my doctor was worrying me about it, I was uncertain and read that was the recommendation from Dr. Flechas. I went back up to 50 mg right after his birth, which I chose not to mention to the docs and I am still breast feeding my son at that dose.

So far, so good. An additional interesting point is that I am hypothyroid and had been working on lowering my dose of armour when I became pregnant. I take only 45 mg' but had lowered to 30 and had severe hypo symptoms, all the while taking 50 mg of iodine. At 8 weeks my tsh was tested and was elevated and I went back up to 45 mg, but was nervous throughout the pregnancy that low thyroid hormone could have damaged my son's mental development. Well, he is very bright, so no problem there and it leaves me wondering if the studies are more indicative of problems resulting from low Iodine than from low thyroid hormone, as these problems tend to go hand in hand. Hope this is clear and helpful.
