I took Jarrow brand insitol powder, which is manufactured by Tsuno Rice Fine Chemicals in Japan.

It is a fine, sweet tasting powder.

This nutrient caused some strange & paradoxical reactions in me at first, but I stuck with it, my body quickly became used to it... and reactions mellowed out and went away within a week.

It's important to give inositol a fair trial, before making a decision about it.

The most noticeable effect of inositol is "quieting mental chatter": Say you are trying to fall alseep and your mind is "active" and thinking about what happened that day or will happen tomorrow... keeping you up - inositol slows those thoughts way down. You just think about something once, and then it goes away... not over and over again. Taken one hour before bed for insomnia - It doesn't "knock you out" like Ambien or Trazadone - it just greatly reduces tension and mental noise... allowing natural sleep to come easter.

If taken during the daytime, I notice a distinct anti-depressant effect that is easily comparable to an SSRI, minus the side effects. Colors are brighter, the mood is elevated, my mind sees things in my life as "the glass is half full" rather than half empty. I feel sociable, calm and I like myself. It doesn't prevent me for worrying or change my personality entirely... but if I do worry or have bad emotions... the worrying is more intermittent and 'managable'. It seems much easier to 'drop' something from your mind and not think about it anymore.

Inositol dosage varies widely between individuals. Some of us need just 1/4 teasoon... some need 18 grams or more.


I took 1/4 teaspoon at first and found good effects, both in the morning and before bed. Felt great. Then I bumped up the dose to 1/2 teaspoon and I felt quite "stoned" s- fuzzy, spacey, forgetful. I thought I was way over-doing it... so I went down to a micro dose of 35mg... intending to 'start low and go slow' but paradoxically, tiny doses had an agitating effect on me. . I felt like it was making my serotonin system 'out of whack' and I could feel some mania... and then pretty serious Depression after the mania wore off.

I went back to 1/4 teaspoon... it gave me good, soothing, calming effects. I felt a little strage the first 2 or 3 days... kinda "buzzed" or stoned (which apparently happens sometimes in people who have used cannabis before, Dr. Pupko speculates it may affect cannabinoid receptors).. but my body got used to it and I could slowly work up the dose from there. After 4 days or so on 1/4 teaspoon.. I worked up to a heaping 1/4 teaspoon... which had more powerful calming effects... but accustomed to it quickly.

If taking first thing in the AM.. it seems to work until about dinner time for me... when I can either re-dose... or hold off and re-dose before bed. If taken before bed... the lingering anti-depressant effect seems to last until mid morning or lunchtime.

Discontinuing inositol does not cause withdrawal... but anxious thoughts, if you naually have them... may return. And they may seem quite intense compared to the calm, chilled stated inositol invokes...

p.s. People with hypoglycemia symptoms may need to be cautious / conservative with inositol doses... or take it with food... because it is a Sugar alcohol that has effects on blood sugar.
