Consensus is a strong word around these parts. People come and go as well. It seems the current zeitgeist is to avoid further trauma to the lips by not force peeling them -- and the way to do this seems to be constant moisturizing.
I think the jury is still out on whether the dead crusts or the raw skin in absence of the stratum corneum invites more bacteria and yeast (and parasites perhaps!) colonization -- just something we all have to monitor, and inflammation can be a useful sign.
