Povidone Iodine is better for topical...and you should be able to get it pretty easy at the drug store. It's what they use for surgery and the like. It's basically a slow release elemental only... so it's like doing the lugol's, only time release and without the uneeded KI.
Getting 100K+ vitamin d would be a great idea too... as at this time of year we run about a 10k/day deficet.
Edit: Oh and getting some K2 is really a great idea with the D... and don't worry about a single large dose or a few large doeses... medical field has done tests on seniors with single doses of up to 500K IU in a single serving with no negative side effects (not recommended though... they do sell 50k iu pills... which can make it much easier to get someone to do say a week of them and then stop... should get you through the winter :) )
