Re: Blastocystis & Systemic Candida - does anyone have atrophy and severe reactions to starch?
Hi Jade,
Yes, I had Blastocystis Hominis over the summer; took me 3 months plus to get over it. This issue caused a flare-up of candida overgrowth.
These are the different things I tried:
1)Grapefruit seed extract helped to keep the blasto tolerable, but it never killed it off completely. I used this in between the different things that didn't work. It was the only way I could get from day to day in a half way normal manner.
2) Metronidazole (Flagyl) - an antibiotic. After taking half the Rx I got carpal tunnel in my left wrist and had to quit.
3) Yodoxin - Developed eye problems, had to quit.
4) Alinia (Nitazoxanole) - After 6 pills of this I did not show a recurrence of blasto. Although I did have quite a battle with candida, which I was aware I would have. This was better than battling the blasto.
For diarrhea my doc Rx'd Cholestrymine. It's a powder you mix with water. You need to drink a lot of water all day because it binds with impurities and draws them out of your colon. If you don't drink a lot of water you get constipated. But this stopped my diarrhea right away, this and the grapefruit seed extract.
After I showed no blasto, tested by looking through microscope at urine by my holistic M.D., he said my urine showed an over abundance of serotonin.
"Serotonin is produced by pathogenic amoebas, and its effect on the gut causes diarrhea." - Wikipedia

For this he said I should do a regimen of grapefruit seed extract, bioflavonoids, and a homeopathic liquid he made up (sorry, don't know what this is). If you want to know what this is, I can find out. I am much, much better now, almost normal.
