And, YES, I agree that, if there was any real risk in consuming xylitol, then there would be more papers in more recent times than the 1980s papers that the WebMD statement is based on.

Hi Everyone,

I've come across a 1978 R.J. Smith article that may be relevant. A John D. Brunzell who was able to review it here says it contains "a suggestion that xylitol... may be associated with bladder tumors at high levels of ingestion in mice."

The article that Brunzell talks about is "Xylitol: another sweetener turns sour." by Smith, R.J., Science J99: 670-71, 1978.

However the 1978 Smith article is not available online. But, even if it was available (in medical libraries), I wouldn't worry too much about it. If the above statement is just a "suggestion" then it's just a vague, non-specific, questionable opinion without any evidence.
