I tested HIV+ in 2004. At the time, I was an AIDS denialist and did nothing. As time went on, as Science would have it, my viral load went up, and CD4 count went down. I began using CS, and a bevy of other natural supplements. To make a long story short, in 2010 I wound up with a life threatening case of Pneumocystis Pnuemonia, a fungal pneumonia specific to advanced HIV disease and other immune suppressing conditions, viral load upwards of 250,000 and a CD4 count of <10. I had lost approx 30 lbs spent 6 days in the hospital fighting for my life.

While I was in the hospital, a young doctor making her rounds looked at me from behind the mask she had to wear while in my room, and asked "Why are you here?". Confused, I looked at her and she continued "You get that we have moved past this right? You understand that modern medicine has made it so that you do not have to be here?". She recommended that I find an infectious disease doctor immediately and begin a medication regime, which is exactly what I did.

I live in NYC, and now work with a doctor who was present in NYC for the advent of HIV emergence and treatment. I trust this man, and since beginning my work with him, I have more than regained my health. My viral load is undetectable, my CD4 count has steadily increased since beginning my medication, and I have yet to experience any side effects from my medication. I have regained all the weight I lost, and feel far more healthy now than I did prior to medicating.

A word of warning- No matter what strategy you employ to treat your most recent diagnosis, find yourself an infectious disease doctor and have him/her monitor your CD4 count and viral load, so that you make the most informed possible decision about your treatment method. HIV is nothing to mess with, and I say this because it almost killed me. Tweet
