My dog is voluntarily fasting

It's not unusual for this dog to go off her food after or during her season but this time she took it to a new level. She started refusing food several weeks ago and showed no appetite whatsoever. During that time, her BMs were absolutely disgusting reaching the point where they were just a black, tarry substance. After about a week, she recovered her appetite but not for her normal food or treats. (Can't say as I blame her as it's obviously denatured crap but it's what the breeder insists on and in turn, my wife, as it is her dog!)

For a few days, I got away with feeding her fresh cooked meat with rice and peas which she tucked into quite happily but the management put a stop to this because "it's not proper dogfood."

Since then, the dog has eaten the odd complete meal and at other times just picked out the fresh meat from the kibble or just gone without. She's happy but I suspect that she'd be happier if on a more species-correct diet. I know from experience that she will soon settle into the normal food with relish but I'll keep the memory of how she naturally cleansed her body on her own accord.
