Re: Iodine Poisoning Humour

Whispering wind thanks for the interesting comments.

For me almost all language is cultural dictate. By which I mean its spelling, use and common understanding are usually culturally/socially constructed. I am not talking about its individual inception but rather the developed social response. Humour is the same. Language is formed to communicate. Community "says" how language and humour operate. Why did you change your spelling of humour?

With regard the comments about humour let me put another point of view: if at the table I burst out laughing and all of you were silent what would be your response? If I sat in silence and did not respond to your "community" laughs what thinks you? : That I don't enjoy humour. That I am arrogant, slow or dim witted. No. My conclusion is we laugh at different things.

I am sure at our table you would be puzzled at both our conversation and humour. I know we both enjoy a laugh so why don't you laugh with us?? Should I think you mean spirited?? No not at all. That would be cultural arrogance.

Seeing "LOL" in the way that you describe is an example of underlying social norms. Being presumptive about common social norms and their use is not something I can happily do here. I frequently get it wrong - let us see how I get on now?

You "Hogwash" my honesty. No offence.

Your "whitewash" causes big difficulties.

(Said Fast, that is how I usually communicate. Struggling at our table?)

There is no issue about friendships here. My comments are said with sincerity and respect. Not intended personally at all.

And - Yes. I am laughing. Are you?

There is another way to address the whole point I was trying to make. When trapper, yourself and others read Ginagirls comment: "Did you see Ginagirls' sarcasm at first OR only after she pointed it out?"
Those individual reactions are socially determined.

Ginagirls' comment broke me up when I first read it. From the posts above others didn't see it Ginagirls'way. Why not?

Trapper: thanks for your backgrounding. I find those individual dispositions so subtle and deeply ingrained. - Ah to be aware of a tenth of those in myself.

Another thought:

RAOTFLMHO I think is how I should communicate in netspeak!!!! For me that is offensive. Our humour is never about putting it "out there" "telegraphing". To do so would kill the laugh. The reason is simple: We resent having someone defining what we should feel, which of course is what culturally determined is all about. When I hear dubbed laughter in a cinema or RAO... or !!!! that is my immediate reaction.

Trying to make a simple point across: cultures are different.

Fascinating T2.
