Mice lacking the farnesoid X receptor that controls the synthesis and export

of bile acids have elevated hepatic bile acids. These mice have frequent liver

tumors, indicating that bile acids have a role in hepatocarcinogenesis.

Children with a deficiency in the bile acid export pump that conveys bile

acids from hepatocyte cytoplasm into bile canaliculi have an increased

incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma.
