Re: Restless legs
For what it's worth, I suffer often with RLS and have posted about it here a few times. Magnesium doesn't seem to make a huge difference for me. I have many neurological issues anyway, so it's probably related to that. I often feel the restless sensation not only in my legs, but even my brain and whole body. Sometimes just the legs. Very hard to describe and very uncomfortable, though not painful. It mostly happens at night, and I have found that Hyland's Restful Legs formula makes a huge difference. I would say that it fixes the problem 85% of the time within 30 minutes. I go through the stuff fairly quickly, and I wouldn't be without it.
Magnesium generally works for restless leg syndrome (RLS) because it antagonizes calcium. Basically magnesium acts like a natural calcium channel blocker keeping muscles relaxed. But there are things that can elevate calcium levels even if you are not taking supplemental calcium. For example hyperparathyroidism or excess phosphorus intake.
Certain medications can also cause these symptoms as well as neuropathy.
One thing to keep in mind though is that RLS is a pretty vague "diagnosis". The reason is because syndromes such as restless leg syndrome and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) are not diseases. Syndromes are groups of symptoms. So anything causing the symptoms of those syndromes can lead to a diagnosis.
