Re: allergic son

My son (13yo) has environmental allergies and food sensitivities. The food issues are because of pollen- oral allergy syndrome. So far, he has reacted to all the herbs you recommend for the adrenals.

Your suggestion to use watercress worked wonderfully. I bought it fresh and he loves it in fajitas or omelets. I want to buy the powder now to get concentrated benefits. How much should I give him?

A quarter teaspoon three times daily should suffice. Especially if taken with an equal amount of coleus root.

I also want to try your recommendation of coleus since the root is used and we may have more luck than with leaves. How much should I use if I am also using watercress?

You may have luck with the leaves, but not for the reason you think.  The leaves are hallucinogenic. For medicinal purposes you need the root.

Should I be concerned with the diuretic properties of watercress or the fat loss effects of coleus?

No, especially with the small doses that would be used to simply counter allergic reactions.

Are there any other ways an herbalist helps someone strengthen their adrenals who reacts to plants?

The coleus and watercress are the easiest.  Otherwise it is pretty much finding herbs that can be taken without reacting.

He is also has exercise-induced asthma. How many mg. of magnesium do you suggest for a 13 yo 30 minutes before meals (I do know to increase slowly)?

300mg magnesium malate twice daily.

I had to add supplemental calcium because he began to show signs of deficiency with this elmination diet...will the calcium antagonize all magnesium taken with it? I am trying to figure out how much extra magnesium to give him during the day to compensate and be sure he gets enough to keep his asthma at bay.

The easiest way to address both is to have him take the magnesium morning and afternoon and a calcium/magnesium before going to bed.  make sure the calcium is acidified as well such as calcium citrate.  DO NOT use calcium carbonate, which includes coral, oyster shell and dolomite.  Taking both silica and a little vitamin D with the calcium will help increase absorption of the calcium.

Licorice root is also really good for the adrenals and the inflammation of asthma.

How does anyone avoid hypermagesemia?

Just don't go overboard on magnesium supplementation.
