If you actually read credible sources ie. Dr. David Brownstein -- (http://www.iodine4health.com will get you started) who has been researching iodine for the last decade or so, then you would know that iodine DOES NOT attack the thyroid. The antibodies attack the thyroid. IN FACT, adequate amounts of iodine and selenium WILL SUPPRESS the antibodies. This has been experienced over and over again by many, many iodine enlightened hashimoto's folks!
In fact, with hasimotos, if you 1)do not get adequate amounts of desiccated thyroid meds and 2) don't take adequate amounts of selenium and iodine the antibodies will continue to increase and burn up the thyroid. And 3)we are learning it may be very important to go gluten free.
It is a pro-iodine site run by a woman who is a patient of Dr. David Brownstein, former thyroid cancer patient and wife to a hashimoto's patient who has TOTALLY suppressed the antibodies with just iodine and selenium!! He caught the disease early and at this point doesn't need thyroid meds. If and when he gets to that point, he'll eschew synthroid (T4) for desiccated thyroid which contains T1, T2, T3 and T4.
