If this were the case and it accumulated in the body then we would all feel like garbage all the time since acetaldehyde is also found in fruits, vegetables, coffee, and many other plants we consume. It is also generated by the heating of fats during cooking and is found in cigarette smoke and automobile exhaust, which most of us are exposed to on a daily basis. In addition some of the foods we eat, such as fruits, also contain ethanol that is converted in the body in to acetaldehyde. We also ingest other related aldehydes all the time such as cinnamon (cinnamaldehyde), cherries and almonds (benzaldehyde) anise (anisaldehyde), vanilla (hydroxybenzaldehyde and salicyladehyde), skim milk, coffee and cocoa (furaldehyde), etc. If our bodies did not metabolize these aldehydes we would be in serious trouble.
