Re: From Farm to Fridge to Garbage Can - The Tremendous Amount of Food Waste

These are some of the reasons that I like to grow my own fresh foods. Choosing varieties that you can pick what you need, when you need it, and leave the plant growing in the ground, is a great way to have fresh vege, without the waste.

Anything unused can go into the compost, and the cycle begins again.

Cos lettuce are great, you can take the leaves you want and leave the plant to grow more. Kale, Chinese broccoli, rocket, chicory, beans, peas, and many more vege, can be grown like this. In fact many plants benefit from picking the fruit regularly.

If apples or pears get bruised or floury, chop them up and make apple sauce or stewed fruits, which can then be frozen and used when you need them.

There is no need to waste so much food, we could all come up with ideas to make more efficient use of the food we buy and grow. It just takes a bit of imagination.
