Re: Maybe Candida doesn't cause leaky bowel!

I agree. It may well be true that one needs to be prone to SIBO to get SIBO from Antibiotics . In other words, one may need to have some digestive or motility weakness for SIBO to occur. But I don't know whether this distinction is helpful or not. The fact is we don't know if we have upper GI digestive dysfunction anyway. There aren't any reliable tests for such things. You might have such a problem. For example, how do you know you produce enough bile or enzymes or bicarb for your small intestine to inhibit bacteria?

However I am loathe to assume anything. I think there is more they don't know about the bowel than they do know. A lot is speculation I think. I think it is possible that certain 'bad' bacteria thrive in the small bowel if there is an absence of good bacteria in biofilm to protect the small bowel from attachment of bad bacteria. One such species might be Streptococcus. It produces lots of d-lactate which might cause leaky bowel.

Just because your stool has lots of lactobacilli, does not mean your small intestine has a biofilm containing lactobacilli preventing attachment by Strep or other bad bacteria. All your lactobacilli might be in your colon. In fact I think 90% or more of lactobacilli in most healthy people is in the large bowel.

Jorge, order a Neurotoxic Metabolites Test. I think this might be a better test of SIBO than the HBT, and much easier. It is a simple urine test. It tests for H2S. The big advantage of this test is you can do it from time to time to assess whether a certain treatment is working.
