Re: Maybe Candida doesn't cause leaky bowel!

Yes, you have long held that view. I am coming around to your way of thinking. I cannot subscribe to the view held by most doctors and gastroenterologists that Candida does no harm in the bowels. However I am starting to think that it is secondary to a bacterial problem, most commonly SIBO.

If only doctors would admit that yeast can overgrow, and this can be a complication during Antibiotic treatment for some patients, and prescribe effective antifungals when required, I would have more faith in them (doctors). I believe the truth is somewhere in between what most gastroenterologists believe (that Candida is never a problem except in rare severely immune depressed people such as AIDS) and what most naturopths believe (that most people suffer from some degree of candidiasis).

My current view is that Antibiotics cause SIBO, and SIBO causes leaky bowel, and a leaky bowel causes Candida related problems.

The real problem I have at the moment is deciding how best to treat my SIBO. I would take Antibiotics if I felt they would rapidly clear up the problem. However SIBO is very difficult to eradicate. It keeps coming back. I took strong Antibiotics (rifaxamin + vancomycin) for two weeks last year and although I initially felt better, I was worse off afterwards when the bad bacteria grew back, plus I had more yeast symptoms. So I already know that I am a 'hard case' when it comes to curing SIBO. All things considered, I think I need to try alternative means of reducing the bad bacteria in my small bowel. I am currently trialing GSE.
