How much iron do vegetarians need to supplement?

Been eating a vegetarian diet for 1 year now so kinda new at this, also no eggs or glasses of milk either but not completely vegan.. wondering how much iron people are taking and how often. I don't want to overdo it because I have read up on how bad too much iron is, however I dont want to become anemic... one doctor I went to said to make sure I'm getting the recommended daily allowance (18-25 mg) every day in either a multivitamin or an iron supplement and to get regular blood tests to make sure I'm not getting too much or letting it get too low.

Does this sound right and is this what others on here are doing? Also, does anyone take it once a week in a larger does like the 155 mg pills that you would get at the drug store.. rather than taking it every day? Does everyone get blood tests to monitor it?

Thanks!
