The role of vitamin C on iron absorption is well known and has been proven beyond doubt. Vitamin C is undoubtedly an essential nutrient for the body, but this does not necessarily mean all vitamin C supplement is beneficial to the body. In fact, there are published papers which recommend against supplementation of artificial vitamins. The following paper is one of those:

This paper says: "vitamin A, vitamin C, folate, and {alpha}-tocopherol from supplements were positively associated with the serum GGT concentration". The serum GGT levels reflect the degree of oxidative stress. So, if the findings of this study are up to something, then ingestion of mega dose of vitamin C could do more harm than good.
