There is a lot of controversy about how healthy hunter-gatherers were, how abundant food was, and how hard they worked. Although, these controversies apply to the present too, as there are still some hunter-gatherers on earth. I think the abundance probably depended on the time and the region. As far as improved nutrition with more consistency of food supply, I think that is an interesting argument and one I would like to believe. Many people that I have read say that adaptation to grains is more advanced in, for example, Asians than in Europeans, and also, with regard to dairy, much of the world's population has not adapted to dairy. So, I'm thinking that we have not fully adapted to dairy and grains yet and that older foods might be more healthy, relatively?
