"The wall you run into is the wall you built."  - the 'you' is the ego. Ego, in and of itself, has no real substance, it does not exist, hence all walls are non-existent. Non identification is the key -turiya 

"Who I have been is powerless to take me further"  - The ego 'self' is the 'I', it is the 'me', it is the 'you', it is the accumulated knowledge of the intellect. Drop 'your' knowledge (what 'you' think you know), get your ego 'self' out of the way, and freedom is. The 'me' cannot be taken further, the 'I', the 'me', resides within the realm of the intellect. It cannot go beyond intellect, it cannot transcend itself. To go further, the 'I' & the 'me', will also have to be left behind. Again, it is a matter of dis-identifying. -turiya
