Good for you, you're right a lot of people don't quit when they are diagnosed.
My step-dad had emphysema, he just died the other day, but it wasn't the emphysema. He was 85 and was diagnosed in his late 50's I think. He didn't do anything right as far as nutrition (he did quit smoking). But, one thing he did was never worry about anything. I never met anyone who was so undisturbed by anything "scary" or bad that came along.
He died basically because he gradually quit eating and was ready to see my mom again, I think. So, everything just shut down and he slept more and more til he didn't wake up.
I have seen so many things that are supposed to be good for emphysema, but I can't remember them! When I come across them again, I'll post. But there is plenty you can do.
