Re: Mirena and possible mini-stroke?

@Dinyell: My younger cousin, Lisa age 22, also suffered an experience similar to yours. Last week, she was at home when she became dizzy and began to lose feeling of her legs and arms. My aunt rushed her to the local Emergency Department where she a diagnosis could not be identified, thus she was admitted as an inpatient. About a week later, she was diagnosed as having "mini-strokes". While undergoing many lab tests , a MRI , even a cancer screening. When all results returned normal, or negative, the physician looked towards her IUD which so happened to be Mirena. He discussed his recommendation of removing the IUD and observing her closely post-removal. She, of course, being young in age and terrified of the results of a stroke agreed with the recommendations. The physician then contacted her OB/Gyn for removal. When her OB/Gyn arrived she entered her hospital room and began berating her for "blaming Mirena" for her problems. She went as far as telling Lisa that if she became pregnant within a year of the removal that she would "DIE". My poor cousin was terrified and the hospitalist treating her for the mini-stroke informed her that the OB/Gyn was "already in a bad mood" when she came to the hospital so she should not take it to heart. Lisa then phoned me (I've been in health care for 10 years and in med school) to ask if she could die and if I thought that Mirena attributed to the mini-strokes. I informed her that in my opinion people's bodies respond differently and just because this does not happen to the masses doesn't mean it cannot happen. All in all, I'm glad she got it removed and am closely analyzing her post-removal lab results. Thanks for bringing this to light.

p.s. Mirena does list "stroke" as a common side effect.

Sincerely,
Desiree
