Re: ultraviolet light (edited)

Ozone is another good parasite killer. I have a fairly cheap ozonater that I put in the sink or bowl of water where I also have new produce from the grocery store. I keep it in for about 5 minutes. Makes me feel that I'm cleaning the veggies.

This is a great way to extend the shelf life of your produce. I demonstrated this to the co-op up north a long time ago. They were losing produce quickly due to spoilage, so I told them about the ozone and loaned them my big monster (4 foot cold corona discharge tube hooked up to 15,000 volts). They made up two bags of produce and ozonated one and left the second bag as a control.  I had them just moisten the produce to allow oxidation then blow the ozone in to the bag. The ozonated produce lasted 3 weeks longer than the control bag.

The ozone works by killing the bacteria and fungus that cause spoilage. And it destroys the ethylene gas that promotes ripening.
