Its good to be treated, in general, by a biologically trained dentist. That means one who believes in treating the whole person and doing so in a way that doesn't compromise any part of their health when fixing their teeth. Many dentists have jumped on this bandwagon, so you have to be careful to find one who really practices the right way and who cares(not in it just for the money). Ideally you could get a test to see which materials, for fillings, are biologically compatible to you. But one dentist that I met at a class he gave on biological dentistry said they tested many materials and found that the porcelein they use is compatible to almost all people. Just don't get any mercury amalgams. Some people do fine with gold but others have immune reactions to it. If you are just doing a simple filling your regular guy is probable fine, so long as he does not believe in using amalagams or mercury. Many dentists give people the option of what material they want used. If you ever need to find a new dentist you could look up the International Academy of Biological Dentistry and Medicine, andyou can get a listing of dentists who were trained and who adhere to their principles.
