There is a precept that goes: don't take what isn't given,
(which is what children are commonly taught in all cultures) and the little known refection of that precept, which is even more necessary (humbling and profound) to comprehend is:

"don't give what isn't taken."

Somehow, it's only through genuine compassion for oneself and others that this makes sense. ie: no praise, no blame.
there is a point of gentle location that embraces both, and neither.
