An absolutely brilliant debate post in a debate forum may not be rated for any number of reasons...

The most frequent reason debate messages are not rated IMO... the post is not entirely focused on the debate and includes an attack on the messenger; even if it is just a simple one line, rather benign jab or name calling.

This eliminates the said "brilliant" post from any rating vote from me regardless of the apposing posters behavior.

Many posters have had brilliant debates with me... that did nothing but inspire me to learn by defending my position. What a great opportunity :-) However, most times, as I dug into my position, their posts would degrade into name calling that would, on occasion, pull me away from the debate focus... not good.

I am sure the understanding, or lack of understanding, along with personal bias of the moderator (I see this a great deal, much more than I would like to see on CZ) also plays a part... we are all biased whether we are willing to admit it or not.
