you change your pattern of thought. thoughts come into your head, but you also can generate your own thoughts. Dont indulge you despair. Move your mind to something else or do something which engages you enough to distract you from your negative thoughts.
When all else fails -- repeat a mantra of your choice ad nauseum. I use hail marys and when I was young I used to say "Paul, paul, paul" over and over oddly enough. Its the brain version of banging your head against the wall. and make yourself do something -- ride a bike, dance to the radio (alone, at home, in your room, knit, play scrabble -- ANYTHING.
You cannot hang on to your pain and let go of it at the same time. Indulge yourself for awhile and then move on. Keep repeating the pattern until it becomes second nature.
When you keep thinking thoughts which sadden, anger, depress you -- you end up in a downward spiral. It is system encompassing -- first your body, then your world.
Sometimes things are not resolvable -- somethings you just have to let go.
