There is a SAFE totally ORGANIC weed killer that I use on poison ivy called BURN OUT. It contains clove oil, vinegar and soap. In fact, I just pulled my BurnOut yesterday to spray a nice patch of poison ivy on the property line that the cats seem to be getting into.
