activated?

activated?
charcoal seems to be charcoal and I understand the buzz word that it needs to be 'activated.' Can somebody shed some light on the difference? And if you can MAKE it - how would you make 'activated' charcoal?
I'm all about making my own stuff. I don't want any more plastic bottles sitting around my house or worse - FILLING UP A LANDFILL.
