--Tomatoe plants--Gardening Fun

Hi Ya'll,

I have been having fun with my garden tomatoe plants watching them grow !

This year I am trying to implement better growing conditions with plenty of mulch and providing them with what they may need to grow better?

I have different varieties and two of them I have planted next to each other.

These two are Roma and Rutgers that I am having fun with watching to see what I may learn?

If you read my earlier posts my garden got flooded when we had 18 inches of rain earlier, with these tomatoes standing in water for several days?

Some of the other plants died, but most of them I was able to save when the flood waters went down.

What has been amazing is to see these two plants stop growing upward and now grow more outward as well as build a Much Bigger Caliper stem size and at the same time Cause suc*** sprouts to push out at each leaf joint from the bottom of the plant to the Top and each of these seems to be setting Blossoms and some are starting to open?

On Apr 24 I measured across the Roma plant from leaf to leaf tip and got 14 inches>

Today on Apr 25 I measured and this same plant had 16 1/2 inches wide across the same plant leaves !

If it keeps this up I may have a Tree bush instead of a Tomatoe Vine?

I have talked to ole timers who said they had seen ole time tomatoes that would stand up like Trees that they didn't need to stake to keep the fruit off the ground !

I have Never before accomplished this myself, but am looking forward to it?

The Rutgers plant was also 14 inches across on the 24th of Apr and today, the 25th Apr it measured 21 inches across !

As this is taking place the Stem Calipier(Diameter) is growing Larger !

Remember a plant much have a Bigger Caliper stem in order to transfere more thru the plant from the Top Leaf to the roots and back again !

Generally the Bigger the Calipier the plant stem is in ratio to it's height may mean the better the chance this plant may end up producing More if it is able to continue to receive enough of the needed Energy !

What may generally take place is one may increase the Calipier and set More Fruit, then be unable to supply enough of the needed Energy to fill the set fruit out to maturity !

This is starting out to be a Fun and Interesting Gardening year !

Think of what a person could do if they could learn to grow enough Tomatoes on one plant to feed a family of four thru the summer !

Smile Tis your choice.
