i had mirena for 3 1/2 years. i didnt really have many side effects for the first month. mirena had me so messed up mentally and physically. i am not one to throw pity parties for myself. my family has a history of mental illness. i have suffered with Depression since i took my bc pills at age 21. never had anxiety. never suicidal until about four months after i got mirena at the age of 28. i could not think. i could not hold a conversation and i was severely suicidal. i was also a raving b****. i even became bi polar schizophrenic to the point i could not look at the ceiling some days because of the dark shadows or go into my kitchen because i knew there were sharp knives in the drawer. anxiety was overwhelming most days. i could not go anywhere by myself most days.
since removal on feb 26th 2008 my life has changed dramatically. the first six months post removal i had anxiety come and go. i no longer think of suicide. i am very self confident and i enjoy life. i am very calm, cool, and collected.
looking back, birth control pills did mess with me mentally and physically. but mirena was the worst of them all!!! i just wish a doctor had warned me of potential side effects on some women. so, yes i believe mirena can cause anxiety issues.
