Re: Looks like fish is back on the agenda then!
Thanks for that info. I am pleased to say I do not use cooking oil, and eat beans and some seeds. Interesting about the 3 - 6 balance.
Anyone know if shellfish contain DHA? Cockles, mussels, scallops and so on?
I was going to ask why we need to supplement with DHA, but after a bit of Googling I found
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Docosahexaenoic_acid
which says:
"Studies of vegans and vegetarians
Vegans and vegetarians have markedly lower stores of DHA. Their bodily DHA levels do not rise much even with high dietary levels of linolenic acid. This, and features of the production and distribution of DHA in pregnant and lactating women, indicates that DHA per se is an essential nutrient.[22] Since DHA is made by algae, there are vegan DHA supplements available."
-and-
"There is less DHA available in the average diet than formerly, due to cattle being taken off grass and fed grain before butchering; likewise, there is less in eggs due to intensive farming."
Once again - grass fed meat comes up. As a nutritarian I think I'll have to make a bit of a U turn on vegetarian and vegan, but no point in eating meat until I find some grass fed beef. In the UK it costs a fortune and the nearest supplier is a hundred miles from me

So I guess I'll stick to fish, or buy a gun and shoot birds, or trap them with a stick, rope, bread and an upturned cardboard box. I'll be looking at the wood pigeons in my garden in a different light now.
