Re: Magnesium Oil Stings?
tierra,
It's ultimately best to leave the magnesium oil on your skin at least for a while so that it can be absorbed. I no longer shower after a magnesium bath, but I may shower a few hours later. I also wait at least 20-30 minutes after I spray magnesium oil on my skin before I take a shower. In your case, removing the oil from your skin after a few minutes is a good idea until you have adjusted to it.
You will not overdose on transdermally applied magnesium chloride. My understanding is that skin absorbs the amount it needs. At dosages typically used directly on skin (e.g., one ounce or less), there is no reason for concern (if the magnesium is pure).
Regarding purity, Ancient Minerals is a good choice because the magnesium comes from ancient deposits protected deep underground for hundreds of millions of years. Less desirable are seawater derived magnesium oils because it can be difficult to filter out all the contaminants found in seawater (e.g., bromine, heavy metals, etc.). The same is true for nigari sourced from seawater, especially if it is not filtered. The amount of contamination may be relatively low, but it would difficult to know without testing.
The least desirable form of magnesium chloride is the synthetic form manufactured from chemicals. It is still magnesium chloride, but there have been toxicity problems, especially heavy metal contamination. In addition, chemically synthesized magnesium chloride lacks the full spectrum of minerals found in natural magnesium chloride.
